I. Academic Courses

1 M.Phil.

Four students of the academic year 2006-2007 have completed their written examinations and will be submitting their theses in October 2007 .For the academic year- 2008-2009 four students , two boys and two girls have enrolled.

3.The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):

500 Children are presently enrolled in our school for the academic year 2009-2010. 10 th std matriculation examinations were held for the year 2008-2009 in which 20 students appeared for the examination and all of them passed with 16 of them passing with first class.

4.Accreditation from Tamil Nadu Open University:

CReNIEO has been granted recognition as Vocational Programme Centre (VPC) under the Tamil Nadu Open University for the following courses at
CReNIEO centers at Pulicat and Yercaud.

5.Recognition from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) as Community College:
CReNIEO had applied for recognition as community college in February 2009. It was proposed to run IGNOU’s Two year Associate Degree programme in rural development through the distance education mode. A broad syllabus has been submitted. A letter of recognition as community college has already been received from IGNOU. A detailed syllabus is being worked out taking into account the salient features of the CReNIEO’s Rural Development Management (RDM) syllabus. As directed by IGNOU three committees have been tentatively formed. They consist of CRENIEO members and consultants and nominees from IGNOU.

Govindarajan appeared for her viva and was awarded her Ph.D. The viva was held on 5.3.2010. Dr. R. Rajkumar Prof. of Economics, I.D.E University was the external examiner. It was highly commended. Her thesis was on “Study on Air pollution in Chennai city with special reference to vehicular pollution 1995 to 2006” Ms. N. Malathi, continues her Ph. D studies as part time scholar under the guidance of Dr. M. Naganathan.

3. The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):

598 Children are presently enrolled in our school for the academic year 2010-2011. 21 students appeared for the 10th STD matriculation examinations in March 2010 and all of them passed with 20 of them
getting first class and one of them securing a second class.

With global warming and atmospheric pollution becoming serious issues in today’s world, environmental management courses are becoming one of the  preferred fields of study. Environmental management course deals with designing and implementing regulations and policies to make the environment more comfortable and friendly. As an expert in this field, one will also have to deal with environmental assessment, protection, pollution, its controlling methods, developing management strategies for environmental protection and pollution control. An environmental manager not only means a lucrative profession but also brings benefits to the society at large. 

Course period: One academic year- two semesters

Credits:

Each semester is allotted a minimum number of credits to be completed. For the first year students it is 21 credits for the first semester and 23 for the second. There is a minimum number of credits to be completed so as to get entry in the next semester

One lecture or tutorial hour per week per semester is assigned one credit. One laboratory hour per week per semester is assigned half credit. For each lecture or tutorial credit, the self study component is 1 hour/week

Course Fees:
Tuition fees Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 50,000 per candidate.  Local travel and field boarding and lodging to be paid by candidates.

Methodology:
Classroom Lectures and field Project work. With Introductory course, documentation expertise, term papers.  

Project Work:
In CReNIEO’s project area in Pulicat, lake and coastal areas. Class room, lab and teaching aids are available with net connections. Accommodation facilities for resource person(s) is available but for students it has to be arranged.

Creation of a data base:
It is proposed that the field research work should be able to generate important data base for CReNIEO which will enable CRENIEO to launch environment development programmes, bio diversity restoration and community development and health services. It can help in formulating development interventions through DFID.

 Linkages:
Martin Luther Christian University, National Skills Development Corporation, National Institute of Ocean Sciences, Colleges and other institutions, practice schools.  IDEA Sussex.

Finances:
To look for soft loans from LEAD banks.

Syllabus Formulation:
The groups will meet again to formulate the detailed syllabus and the resource persons shortly. Some environment experts will be also be engaged

1.3 The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):

  • In the March 2016 State Board exams all the 44 students of 10th standard passed with high marks.
  • 5centum 2 in Maths and 3 in Social sciences.
  • Aggregate of 400 marks and above was scored by 29 students.
  • As per the government norms fees were increased by 10 % for 2016-2017.
  • Under the RTE Act the governmentreimbursed fees directly to parents accounts for 15 SC/ST, L.K.G students for the year 2015 -2016.
  • School renewal of Recognition certificate was received in March 2016 up to the year 2016. 

1.3.2 Peter Mierele Children Education Aid Fund- Scholarships and school benches with backrest.

From Peter Mierele and friends scholarship endowment, an interest amount of Rs. 13,353 was utilized for 13 children from economically poor back ground Rs. 1,000 scholarship was granted to each of them. A similar amount will be available next year. Peter Mierele, familyand friends contributedRs. 1, 16.377 in March 2016for new toilets at the school.

Dr. Jothi Sivaganam and Dr. The external audit was conducted for the SCINDEA funds Karuppiah of the University of Madras conducted an inspection at Muttukadu to renew the affiliation for PH.D studies, in Economics, Sociology, and History. Dr. Bernard D’ Sami, (history) Dr.Anbones Raj (sociology) were invited along with CReNIEO board members.

1.2 Academic Consultations and seminars:

1.2.1 Seminar on ‘Indentured Labour to Migrant Worker’ (Gandhi’s South African Experience), & “Development and Social Media”

April 6 th 2014 A Seminar on ‘Indentured Labour to Migrant Worker’ (Gandhi’s South African Experience) by Dr. Bernard D’ Sami Professor of History, Loyola College Chennai and the other presentation will be on “Development and Social Media” by Dr. Albones Raj Professor of Sociology, Loyola college Chennai

1.2.2 Indian Institute of Management–Bangalore- Senior Executive Programme:

Two of our staff Mr. Premchandran and Mr. Meersa underwent an Executive management training programme at IIM-B from 12 th to 16 th May. This programme was sponsored by the Fair Climate Network. This is for setting up Rural Community Producer units for local products and for establishing carbon trading activities.

1.2.3 Millets – Yercaud staff and farmers Interaction with the principal, professors and students of the WCC Chennai.

On 12 th September 2014 CReNIEO staff, Yercaud staff and two Yercaud millet famers had an interactive meeting with the Principal of Women’s Christian College, Dr. Ridling Waller and with Vice Principal , Dr.Janet Jeyasingh, Dr. Annette along with professors of the Home Science Department and plant biology. Samples of the millets grown in Yercaud were displayed. Jayaprakash, Project coordinator of Yercaud made a presention on the traditional cultivation of millets. The WCC professors explained on the innovative receipes they have made out of millets, for breakfast, health drinks, and confectionaries.

1.2.3 Mangroves-Internal Project Review Meeting:

On 30 th and 31 st of May 2014, internationally acclaimed Mangrove expert Dr. Kathiresan Head of the Department of Marine Sciences, Annamalai University along with marine scientist Dr. Nammalwar of Anna University and Dr. Jayabalan of Tamil University Thanjavur visited our mangrove resonation programme and reviewed and appreciated our efforts of the Global Nature Fund (GNF) restoration Programme and gave some valuable advice for up scaling the efforts.

1.2.3 Seminar on “Fiscal Federalism Theory and Practice”

Dr. Jyothi Sivaganam, Head of the Department of Economics University of Madras made a presentation on the topic on 6 th August 2015. Dr. M. Naganathan President CReNIEO introduced the topic in his presidential address. The seminar was held on the occasion of CRENIEO founder Director Dr. K.Rajaratnam’s 94 birth anniversary.

1.2.4 Living Lakes Conference, Nanchang, China,

Mrs. Premanjali Rao between 17 th and 19 th in November 2014 attended this conference at Nanchang China and made a presentation on Pulicat Lake. The Theme was on “Lakes in densely populated regions Balance between people and nature.”

1.2.5 Project Review Meeting, Ambalangoda, Sri Lanka,

The third global Nature Fund project review meeting was held on November 2014 24 th to 26 th which was hosted by Nagenahiru Foundation, a Network partner of CReNIEO in the biodiversity restoration programme. Ms. Premanjali Rao and Mr. Meerasa made the presentations. GNF has also requested that a suitable auditor be appointed for the BMZ funds who is registered with the Chamber of Commerce. We had recommended Mr. J.K. Reddy and Co. We have to communicate this to the German Embassy in New Delhi or their approval.

1.3 The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):
In the March 2015 State Board exams all the 33 students of 10th standard passed with high marks with 4 centum in science and 2 in social science. As per the government norms fees were increased by 10 %.

1.3.1 Water Conservation and Recycling: Interactive meeting with Dr. Paul Appasamy

Dr. Paul Appasamy former Vice Chancellor, Karunaya University, Coimbatore and currently Honorary Professor of Economics at Madras School of Economics, talked to the Pulicat School students on rainfall, groundwater recharge, recycling of water, reverse osmosis, water needs, conservation of water and careers in future.

1.3.2 Peter Meierle Children Education Aid Fund- Scholarships and school benches with backrest.

From Peter Meierle and friends scholarship endowment, an amount of Rs. 11,000 from the interest was utilized for 11 children coming from poor back grounds and especially for those who had three or more children studying. A similar amount will be available next year. Peter Meierle and friends contributed for Rs. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm for 13 benches with back
rest earlier this year.

1.3.3 Zonal Sports: Kabbadi and Shuttle Cork

On 19 th July 2015 on the occasion of Bharathiar Memorial Day, Vellammal Matriculation School organized a sport meet at Andarkuppamum which Junior Girls (VI & VII) won the Zonal Title in Kabbadi, while Junior Girls came up as runners up in shuttle – singles and doubles.

Dr. S.N. Nageswara Rao had joined CReNIEO as faculty, Department of History. Four candidates are registered for Ph.D. (History) under the guideship of Dr. Bernard D’ Sami.

1.2 The Pulicat National Matriculation School (PNMS):

The total strength of the school for the academic year 2018-19 is 777. 45 students appeared for the 10 th Std Tamil Nadu Board Exam in 2018 and 44 passed with good marks and one failed. 25 new backrest benches and desks were added for the benefit of the students. A new computer lab and a classroom was also constructed.

1.2.1 Peter Meierle Children Education Fund and Scholarships:

Peter Meierle, his family & friends made a contribution to assist the underprivileged and needy school students. Three scholarships, three computers and four backrest benches were donated to the school this year.
